Westfield Valley Fair
Across Stevens Creek Boulevard from Santana Row, Westfield Valley Fair began as a Macy’s with 39 shops in 1956. It now covers about 2.2 million square feet, with a city line running through the middle.

Discover Westfield Valley Fair
Valley Fair opened in 1956 with 39 stores around a central Macy’s, and for its first two years the Macy’s roof held a children’s carnival with a 40-foot Ferris wheel. Stevens Creek Plaza opened across the street in 1957, anchored by the Emporium, and I. Magnin joined it in 1964. (PCAD, Sourisseau Academy)
In 1986 The Hahn Company joined the two centers into one enclosed, two-level mall. Nordstrom arrived in 1987, the Emporium became a second Macy’s in 1996, and Westfield bought the mall in 1998. (Wikipedia)
The San Jose–Santa Clara line runs through the building, so the mall pays sales tax to both cities. When San Jose raised its minimum wage in 2012 and Santa Clara did not, workers a few steps apart were paid differently; NPR called it A Mall Divided. (Wikipedia, NPR)
A $1.1 billion expansion opened with Bloomingdale’s on March 5, 2020, and Eataly followed in June 2022. The mall now has about 214 stores and 58 places to eat, a Bowlero and an Alamo Drafthouse cinema, and in 2022 its sales were 66% above 2019. (Wikipedia, San Francisco Chronicle)
