Stevens Creek Boulevard
Stevens Creek Boulevard divides Santana Row from Valley Fair. Since the 1950s the corner of Stevens Creek and Winchester has drawn shoppers away from downtown San Jose, and the city now plans its next growth here.

Stevens Creek Boulevard is the main road of West San Jose, running from San Carlos Street west past Cupertino. In the district it passes between Santana Row and Westfield Valley Fair, and it is the central artery of two of San Jose’s planned urban villages, Stevens Creek and Santana Row. (Wikipedia)
A postcard from the early 1960s shows the corner when it was new: Valley Fair and its Macy’s, the Emporium next door, the red roofs of Town & Country Village, the grounds of the Winchester Mystery House, and the Highway 17 interchange under construction. (San José Public Library)
Former San Jose mayor Tom McEnery wrote that downtown San Jose was the heart of the valley’s shopping in 1955, “And then came Valley Fair.” By 1976, historian Heather David notes, the valley was being called Shopping Center Country. (San Jose Inside, Sourisseau Academy)
When San Jose planner Britta Buys studied Santana Row in 2003, she described Town & Country as a “greyfield”: a center out of date for two decades by 1997, on land valuable and large enough to rebuild as a mixed-use neighborhood. (SJSU)
